Summary: A short piece about Lily Rowan.

Lily Rowan was a peculiar girl, in a peculiar situation. Some might argue that the latter caused the former, but anyone who knew her had a sneaking suspicion that God had laid her aside and tacked a note to her that read, “Not to be opened until 1921.” Her situation was this: she was rich. Filthy, dripping rich. She was also beautiful, with a fine figure and a fine voice and big, blinking eyes, a long straight nose, and shiny golden hair. Normally this would have been the ideal conditions for a pampered, clueless, snobbish brat to be created, if not for one pesky detail. All her wealth came from the sewers. Not literally, of course, but her father earned every penny from sewers.

It takes a girl with a very special temperament to swallow a pill like that.

The other children did not know what to think of her—after all, she was so fabulously rich, and that certainly had to be taken into consideration, but sewers?—and in retaliation, she let them know exactly what she thought of them. So it was at the tender age of seven that Lily Rowan got her first dose of superiority. Perhaps things would have been different if one of the children had socked her right in the nose that day. Maybe she would have fled crying, with a new lesson in humility learned. Maybe she would have responded in kind, brawling like a commoner in the dirt and grass.

Maybe, but probably not.
